Hi Bjorn,
Here's a link to a webinar about oil which I found very informative. If you have a hard time understanding spoken English, here's what I gleaned: If you run Avgas, mineral oil is better than synthetic. Synthetics will not hold lead in suspension very well and lead to sludge and heavy deposits. Mobil AV1 was a full synthetic and was pulled off the market after damaging lots of engines. I had to retune my thinking on this topic, since I have been a big believer in synthetic oils for my car, but Avgas changes the rules. Jabiru and Camit can't officially recommend oil additives because the testing and engineering time required would be prohibitively expensive. Two additives that seem beneficial are the Lycoming anti-scuff additive and Camguard. The Lycoming additive is found in the Aeroshell "plus" oils, Exxon Elite, Aeroshell 15w-50, and Phillips 66 Victory 100AW.
Aeroshell 80 & 100, and Philips oils are 100% mineral
Exxon Elite 20w-50 is 26% synthetic (this is what I'm currently using until my stock is used up)
Aeroshell 15w-50 is 50% synthetic
If you use unleaded fuel it isn't much of an issue, as long as you use an ashless dispersant oil. I've read that heavy duty engine oils for diesels and performance cars keep the engine very clean, and do a superb job of reducing wear. Unfortunately zinc and other high pressure additives leave metallic deposits in the combustion chamber that can cause pre-ignition. They say heavy duty oil works superbly, right up to the moment that pre-ignition destroys the motor

Salut Bjorn,
